#BookADay: Mental Health and Multiculturalism

Of Spirits and Madness: An American Psychiatrist in Africa was written by Dr. Paul R. Linde, a psychiatrist I worked with in one of San Francisco’s county jails. Dr. Linde and his wife moved to Zimbabwe. His efforts to learn about another culture, its rituals, and understand how they perceive mental illness and wellness made this book a rich multicultural experience. Although I’m an occupational therapist in mental health, I think anyone who isn’t in the field would appreciate the first-hand experiences of an American who collaborated with staff and treated patients in Africa, a diverse and completely different background than his own. Told with compassion, wit, and love. As a clinician, this book was one of many that influenced my desire to live and work in another country.
