Book Review of “The Enchanted” by Rene Denfeld

I absolutely loved Rene Denfeld’s, The Enchanted. This novel had veracity, heart, and compassion among many interesting characters, both inside and outside the confines of a prison. Like any great book, I slowed down towards the end because I didn’t want to say good-bye to that world, those people. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel as a reader. The writer in me lingered and marinated many times with a perfectly written paragraph or sentence, even if it was a few words. I felt the longing, beauty, and horror on different levels. I think my heart ached more with tiny moments of heaven on earth than the hell that some people went through. Having worked in jail and with many ex-prisoners in my career, I thought every detail, scene, and conversation was believable. None of Denfeld’s writing was gratuitous or trite. Now I want to reread the book and study it even more as a writer. This is one of the best books that I have ever read. The Enchanted would make a great movie, too.
